A few years ago, my friends and I attempted to walk the Alsatian Wine Route in France. We assumed that the "route" would include a footpath, but it's really just a two-lane highway that weaves through the wine-growing region. Most of our day was spent taking scenic "shortcuts" through the vibrant-green vineyards, but we still missed our train home! In the end, the total immersion that came from slowing down was completely worth it. We explored towns that most cars zip past, and we tasted wine and ate at restaurants that are nowhere to be found on the internet.
Ask a local what his or her favorite restaurant is. You'll likely end up being the only tourist in the place!
